Money Carer is an award-winning national social enterprise that provides a range of money management services for vulnerable adults.
As a national partner with the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP), we are the UK's largest and most established provider of welfare benefit appointeeships. Local authorities utilise our appointee and deputyship services along with hundreds of law firms and care providers, family members, and disability charities.
The Money Carer Podcast is a popular way of learning more about the services that we provide.
What is a DWP appointee?
A DWP appointee is appointed to manage the welfare benefits and money management matters of a person who cannot do so themselves. This could be because the person has a mental or physical disability or they are unable to manage their affairs for other reasons.
The appointee is responsible for making sure that the person’s welfare benefits are applied for accurately, received in a separate bank account and used for the benefit of the person they are appointed to represent.
They are also responsible for managing the person’s finances, paying bills and making decisions about how their money is spent.
To become a DWP appointee, a person must apply to the Department for Work and Pensions by completing a BF56 application form and then meet with a DWP visiting officer.
Once appointed, the appointee has legal responsibilities and must act in the best interests of the person they represent and understand the five underpinning principles of the Mental Capacity Act 2005.
What does Money Carer do?
We are an organisation appointed by the DWP as corporate appointees authorised to receive welfare benefits for individuals incapable of handling financial matters or those vulnerable to financial exploitation.
Our services cover the entire UK and are tailored to assist adults with diverse needs, including learning disabilities, mental health challenges, older people, and anyone needing financial advocacy support, in addition to our low-cost direct payments service.
Money Carer is acknowledged as a thought leader and pragmatic organisation with the depth of experience and financial resources to provide daily money management and bank accounts to some of society's most vulnerable people.
What services does Money Carer provide?
In our capacity as a corporate appointee, we undertake all tasks and liaisons with the DWP on behalf of our vulnerable clients, which include:
Opening a managed bank account in the clients' name on our banking platform to receive and manage welfare benefits.
