The overall aim of Liberty Choirs is to provide for excluded and isolated people (for example, those in secure psychiatric settings or people who are serving custodial sentences) via athrough the gate' programme of high-quality singing and social development. It is designed to help develop skills and self-confidence, open up the world of arts through singing and provide access to new social networks as the participants re-enter the wider community.
We are looking for volunteers, ideally based in East Sussex, to sing with our team of exceptional musicians and the men of HMP Lewes every Wednesday from 2-4 pm starting from May 31st. You will be guided by our musical directors, who will provide all necessary troubleshooting and prison security clearance before you attend your first session with us.
You will help us support even more prisoners through their sentence and reduce re-offending rates through inspiring a newfound interest in music.
No prior musical experience is required, but a love of music and singing is beneficial. Volunteers should also have an open minded, non-judgemental approach to prisons and its inmates as well as a supportive, positive and caring attitude towards choir participants and team members.
