Wealden Iron Research Group (WIRG)

Research into the past iron industry of the Sussex, Kent and Surrey Weald.

Membership of WIRG is open to individuals, families and institutions, and includes a bi-annual Newsletter and an annual 'Wealden Iron' Bulletin. Activities include a Field Group, which organises a programme of fieldwork in the autumn and winter, bi-annual meetings with visiting speakers, small-scale excavations, site visits and a variety of other projects undertaken by members. The group also operates an experimental furnace using local ore to make iron fron Spring to Autumn.

The website includes digital versions of two important books on the Wealden iron industry as well as back issues of the Bulletin and Newsletter.  There are also copies of Research papers on the Wealden iron industry.

There is also a searchable database of iron sites and of people involved with these sites as well as a bibliography of publications.
